Solar and battery storage perform different jobs. Solar generates electricity when sunlight is available. A battery stores energy and makes some of it available later. Designing both technologies together allows the panel array, inverters, battery, switchboard, monitoring and control strategy to work toward the same objective.

For a business, a combined system can be designed around daytime generation, evening operations, peak demand, critical loads and future growth. The best outcome depends on how these factors interact, so annual consumption alone is rarely enough to finalise the design.

For a home, coordinated design can balance daytime generation with evening and overnight demand. It can also account for air conditioning, electric hot water, pool equipment, an electric vehicle, working from home or selected backup circuits.
The right combination is property-specific. A large solar array does not automatically justify a large battery, and a battery should not be sized from a rebate threshold or headline capacity alone. We consider usable generation, load timing, backup expectations and future plans together.

- 02Collect the right information — You provide the address, bills, interval data where available, property and roof details, operating hours, major loads, timeframe and supporting photos. We identify any additional information needed before design.
- 03Assess the site and electrical system — We review roof conditions, solar layout, battery location, switchboard, metering, cable routes, access, network requirements and backup needs. A site inspection may be required to confirm the concept.
- 04Design generation and storage together — We prepare a coordinated recommendation covering solar capacity, battery capacity and output, inverters, controls, monitoring, backup scope, equipment and relevant enabling works.
- 05Confirm approvals and eligibility — Network, planning and incentive requirements are checked for the specific project. Any discount shown must be supported by the applicable delivery pathway and current rules.
- 06Install, commission and hand over — The system is installed and commissioned as one project. We configure the intended operating modes, establish monitoring and explain how the solar and battery work together.
Current solar and battery support
The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program supports eligible small-scale batteries connected to new or existing rooftop solar for households and small businesses. Program settings and certificate values can change, so eligibility and the actual discount must be confirmed when the project is quoted.
In NSW, battery activities may also sit within the broader Peak Demand Reduction Scheme. These programs have different technical rules and customer thresholds. Sunny Renewables assesses the relevant pathway for the proposed system and does not represent an indicative percentage as a guaranteed project discount.

How do you size a combined system?

Can a solar and battery system run my property during a blackout?
Only where backup has been included in the design. The battery's power output, usable capacity and the selected circuits determine what can operate and for how long.
Can I add more solar or battery capacity later?
Potentially. Future expansion should be discussed before the initial design so inverter architecture, switchboard capacity, space, communications and approvals can be considered early.
Are combined systems eligible for larger incentives?
